Which Shoes do I wear?

Seems minor but very important to understand what shoes you should be wearing to the gym. First let's look at what type of workouts are you doing. If you are into functional fitness a single cross-trainer is important to have as your main shoe. Too many times we see athletes in running shoes that I have a very soft sole and very little support that is designed for long runs on a hard surface.  I do encourage the running shoes on longer runs in your programming but they can be problematic for basic squatting and dad lifting and pressing as your base of support is unreliable.  Stepping into basic barbell work is a whole other subject where as 100% of the time leave the running shoes at home and stick to the cross trainers. This all-around shoe is going to be good for short runs, burpee's, kettlebell work, basic gym workouts, for and every functional fitness WOD.  Finally, the Olympic lifting/weightlifting shoe. We are starting to see a trend with overuse of the shoe being used in every movement when athletes touch a bar or squat anything more than their body weight (goblet squats and wall balls).  What I'm seeing is athletes starting to limit flexibility and not "cross training" enough in a regular shoe so when it comes time to put barbells in a metabolic conditioning work out they are not ready.  So, the point to the story is to do most of your work in a cross training shoe to increase body awareness to this general base.  Jump into your weightlifting shoes or runners when necessary (Long run-runners or you are working specifically on snatch or clean and jerk-weight lifters).
